Adversaries may employ various means to evade or complete automation checks. Automation checks distinguish human users from bot traffic and prevent bots from reaching the web pages protected by automation checks. For example, a user may be required to solve a CAPTCHA challenge before accessing a form or login page. Traditional CAPTCHAs ask the user to decipher a string of characters, type the characters into a box, and submit the form. reCAPTCHA asks the user to identify images, click a checkbox, or evaluate the user’s behavior from mouse movement and device cookies.[1]
Adversaries may pay for a service that forwards the CAPTCHA challenge to a remote human worker. The human service then solves the CAPTCHA on behalf of the bot.[2] AI tools, such as CapSolver, can also be used to automatically solve CAPTCHA challenges.[3]

| Automate CAPTCHA Completion | Adversaries may attempt to use bots to successfully solve CAPTCHA challenges. CAPTCHA challenges are typically used by defenders to detect and prevent bot and spam traffic from accessing protected webpages. CAPTCHAs are automated tests often placed before login screens or form fields. Traditional CAPTCHAs ask the user to decipher a string of characters, type the characters into a box, and submit the form. reCAPTCHA asks the user to identify images, click a checkbox, or evaluate the user’s behavior from mouse movement and device cookies.[1] Adversaries may use scripts or toolkits to automatically solve the CAPTCHA puzzle. For example, adversaries may develop a script that uses the ImageMagick toolkit to solve the CAPTCHA puzzles to then create multiple valid accounts. ImageMagick tool can convert the images into a RGB complemented image. The CAPTCHA challenge may be solved by identifying and comparing attributes of the RGB images to select the expected image.[2] Once the CAPTCHA challenge is solved, the adversary’s script may access the protected page. After accessing the protected the page, the adversary may submit valid forms to the target. References |
| Avoid CAPTCHA | Adversaries may avoid CAPTCHA challenges by mimicking human behavior. Automation tests, such as CAPTCHA, are typically used by defenders to detect and prevent bot and spam traffic from accessing protected webpages. CAPTCHAs are often placed before login screens or form fields. Traditional CAPTCHAs ask the user to decipher a string of characters, type the characters into a box, and submit the form. reCAPTCHA asks the user to identify images, click a checkbox, or evaluate the user’s behavior from mouse movement and device cookies.[1] Adversaries may attempt to avoid CAPTCHA challenges by constructing a bot that mimics human behavior through browser automation. The automated browser may mimic a human by Masquerading a Browser Fingerprint and through attributes such as session history, IP reputation, and the use of browser APIs.[2] For example, adversaries may use Selenium browsers to simulate a human user. In the Selenium browsers, JavaScript is injected into the website’s Document Object Model (DOM). The injected script may modify browser attributes such as Audio Context and Voice engines, graphic rendering, installed fonts, and browser navigator objects.[3] References
