NPE WUs should be set up to ensure that NPE workout activities and borrower engagements are tailored to the phases of the NPE life cycle.²² Credit institutions should set up different NPE WUs for the different phases of the NPE life cycle and also for different portfolios, if appropriate. All applicable workout stages should receive adequate focus and should be equipped with sufficiently specialised staff.

²² This also encompasses assets not classified as NPEs – such as early arrears, FBEs and foreclosed assets – that play an essential role in the NPE workout process.
